Nineteenth Annual Research Conference in Helsinki, Finland

IAHC Officers

The Nineteenth Annual International Association for Human Caring Research Conference is being held this year in Helsinki, Finland. The Annual Research conference will take place June 14 to 16, 1997 during Finland's Midsummertime. Finland's capital city, Helsinki, hosts IAHC at the Marina Congress Center at the seaside, near the Market Square and passenger harbors of the city.

Sponsors of the conference are IAHC, Nordic College of Caring Science, Department of Caring Science Abo Akademi University, Nordic Academy of Nursing Science, and University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. UWEC provides continuing education units under the aegis of the Continuing Education Approval Program Committee of the Wisconsin Nurses Association accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

The conference focuses on creating human caring--the primacy of love and existential suffering. Through conference presentations, discussions, personal interactions, and local cultural activities, nurses and other scholars, clinicians, researchers, administrators, and graduate students will pursue the goals of the conference. Objectives include: to examine the primacy of human love and suffering in relation to human caring in nursing; to explore developments in research of human caring; and to affirm human caring in the clinical domain as a paradigm for nursing.

A welcoming reception, plenary and concurrent sessions, a poster session, and an international reception stand as the conference highlights.

Attendees will be able to visit Helsinki as well. The city has ties with the East and West and is respected for its advanced education, research, and high technology. June in Helsinki is mostly sunny with occasional showers with the highest temperature around 19o Celsius with 18 hours of daylight. Special events and activities include a tour of the Finnish countryside, sightseeing in the city of Helsinki by bus or boat, a visit to the monument of Jean Sibelius, Finland's renown national composer, midnight mass in the Rock Church, and post conference tours.

Costs for the entire conference are $280 US for IAHC, NCCS, and NASV members and $330 US for non-IAHC members. One day registration, on a space-available basis, is $150 US.
