Patterns of Care: Universal Connections

The 18th Annual International Association for Human Caring Research Conference was held April 28 to 30, 1996 at Mayo Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota. Mayo Foundation Continuing Nursing Education; University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Mankato State University, Winona State University, and Luther College sponsored the conference.

Anne Jones, the Chair of the Conference Committee, set the stage for the conference by extending a warm welcome to colleagues interested in caring research. Participants were invited to dream, renew, and enjoy the co-creating of the Conference's caring community.

The first day of the conference was highlighted when an original quilt, the symbol for the meeting, was displayed. The quilt was designed and created by Eunice Hill. A special feature of the quilt is the border Eunice created from cloth sent from IAHC conferees from around the globe. Because of this, the quilt connected conference participants and crossed all boundaries. The original artwork, An Invitation to Dream,ª created by Mary Erickson, was represented in the center of the quilt.

Sunday provided the opportunity for conferees to contemplate caring communities. On Monday, interpersonal caring was highlighted, and Tuesday, intrapersonal caring.

Many participants found the energy to sustain the level of connection during the meeting. Through the presentations at the conference, participants reaffirmed the centrality of caring as a universal connection. Interpersonal Harmony, Making the Connection during Home visits, Care and Nursing Caring in a Multicultural society, Patterns of Caring from the Heart, and the Heart Exposed: Connecting Poetry, the Human Experience and the Art of Nursing comprised some of the excellent presentations at the meeting. The Minnesota IAHC conference reaffirmed the importance of studying caring in order that such scholarship will continue to contribute to nursing practice, education, and administration.

Leininger Human Care Research Award

The Leininger Human Care Research Award has been established to support research by IAHC members on human care phenomena.

The prestigious award is given in honor of Madeleine Leininger as the founder of the national Caring Research / conference (1978) which was later changed to the International Association of human Caring, created to support nurse scholars who investigate care/caring as the essence of the discipline of nursing. The award symbolizes a commitment to care and caring research to advance the body of knowledge and to use this research based knowledge to improve transcultural care.

Applicants obtain an application from the Chair of the Leininger Research Award committee. One copy of the application and four copies of the research proposal is submitted to the Chair of the Committee by November 30 of each year. The applicant is notified of receipt of application by the Chair. The completed application receives a blind review of a four member IAHC Peer Review Committee with final selection of the candidate made in consultation with Dr. Madeleine Leininger.

Each applicant is notified of the review outcome by the Chair of the Committee. Upon completion of the project, the paper will be considered for presentation at the annual Caring Research Conferences, and for inclusion in an IAHC publication.

Proposals are due November 30, 1996 in the
IAHC Business Office
8680 SW Shetland Ct.
Beaverton, OR 97008
